A Sign for The Roost

Here is a great shot of our new logo for The Roost.  We have used it for the first time officially in our banner.  This picture shows it gracing our table at the Spring Wedding Expo in Cornerbrook NL on March 15, 2014.  We are really happy with our logo that we had designed at Speedpro Signs in Cornerbrook.  Getting the logo printed on a banner was an easy process.  Of course a banner like this one is hardly big enough to replace the convenience store sign on our building and the cost of a new lighted sign doesn't fit into our rather tight start-up budget for the opening of our gift shop.  The solution was inspired by my friend Amy Blair, whom I watched make a large outdoor sign for a business in Smiths Falls ON.  With this in mind, Blake and I undertook the task of making our own sign and so far so good!

Our first step was to purchase an eight foot long piece of plywood, good on one side and have our carpenter friend Jerome cut it into two eight foot pieces.  We purchased marine paint in the basic colours of yellow, white, red and black and found a can of Mediterranean blue at our cottage!  This gave us lots of options for mixing colours.  Next we printed off the letters and rooster picture from the logo in colour and had copies made as large as possible  at our local Staples copy centre.  The plan was to trace the letters directly on to the board, however, even the large copy size was not big enough and I ended up enlarging all of the letters and "free handing" the rooster and anchor!
Blake gave both halves of the sign a few coats of white marine paint and then we cut our the letters and traced around them with pencil and marking pen.  Here we are painting the letters on in red. The rooster and anchor required other colours that we were able to mix with our selection of marine paint.
Here is the rooster and anchor nearly finished.
Maybe next week we will be able to show off the whole sign on our building in York Harbour.  If you live in the York Harbour area you will soon see it appear where the Child's Convenience Store sign is now, on our roof.
Or stayed tuned here to see the results of our first sign project!  Yes I did say first because we have two more to go!
